Bird watching only after golf is the second most popular pastime on earth. It is also the least expensive and is fun for the whole family. All it takes is a pair of binoculars and a good bird watchers guidebook. It’s also fun to mark all of your observed species in a notebook.
We have excellent bird watching trails that show nature at its best. At least 129 different bird species have been seen on these trails.
In Matapédia the « Du Sauvage » trail is about 1 ½ km long and a good 20 minute walk. The main entrance is near the gazebo facing Restigouche garage. A second entrance is found in the woods behind the train station.
The next trail « the intermediate » runs along the railway line for about ½ km or 10 minutes of walking time. Its entrance can be found at the end of the train station platform to your left, leading you to the street to the old bridge.
Finally the third trail « Michaud Creek » is a bit longer about 2 km or a good half hour walk. It runs beside the Restigouche River, crosses a small wood and by several small ponds. The main entrance is at the end of the old bridge road (between the Deux-Rivières school and the CLSC). A second entrance is found behind Lagacé Canteen on route 132 just a bit east of the CLSC.
In St-Alexis-de-Matapédia, the « Ti-Copain » trail is about half a km long or a 10 minute walk. It overflows with a surprising number of different species of birds. This forest trail has a special cachet. The entrance is behind Ti-Copain cabin on Rustico North road.
The memory of these trails will last a lifetime.
